From 15th century France (or Germany, there is some debate), the Poodle's original name “Pudlehund” comes from “pudle” (to splash about) and “hund” meaning “dog”.Ranked as the second most intelligent dog breed just behind the Border Collie (who judges this?), Poodles are active dogs and natural swimmers. Poodles may be reserved upon first meetings, but warm up quickly and have won every major dog show. The Poodle has contributed to many other dog breeds, including Schnauzers and Bichons and today's hybrid "doodle" dogs such as Labradoodles and Goldendoodles.
